Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
