We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
