Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of unwanted gifts could be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The diverse haul could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Italian auction firm. The specific date remains to be announced, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the revenue benefiting non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts reportedly stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.

The full gift list is yet to be officially released, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
