Offspring of Previous South African President Zuma Refutes Terror Allegations as Court Case Commences
The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror allegations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of the city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over remarks she posted on social media several years back during violent unrest in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.
A period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including plundering and arson, left at least three hundred dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been charged of encouraging this turmoil and is charged with accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.
History of the Proceedings
The protests were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the ex-leader's arrest for defying a legal directive to testify at an investigation into claims of graft while he was in power.
She has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's evidence as weak.
She has also consistently stated the accusations against her were an bid to resolve political grievances with her dad after he founded his own party and competed against the ruling party.
Support and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his family.
A small number of followers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has maintained that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and does not have substantial evidence for a guilty verdict.
