The found-guilty plotter – who had been subject to home confinement in his estate while a series of judicial steps and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst increasing speculation that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security facility.
Past Remarks on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing ex- military man showed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.
“Why should we offer those lowlifes a good life?” he once mused. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Jail Facility Discussion
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, four of whom this week toured the complex in an seeming effort to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the last presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells accommodating forty inmates: “That’s practically one square meter per inmate.
“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the lone figure expressing views ahead of the former president’s predicted incarceration.
Writing in a major publication, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the biggest wrong in its history”.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the sitting leader's political party, said: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get proper care – but respectful handling in prison. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the tough treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to tour a jail to learn what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning treatment”.
Possible Incarceration Facilities
Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about thousands of inmates, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “special” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
Its cells are considerably more adequate than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular presidential palace, about 12 miles away.
Based on sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – about the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a television and additionally a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were donated by his relatives,” information stated.
