Prisons Won't Be Fixed Overnight, Minister States, as Police Hunt For Two Individuals Incorrectly Released
Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has described the situation as a "total shambles," speaking this morning.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he referenced remarks made by the justice minister following a recent prisoner release, saying that the minister would establish more robust verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the corrections department supposedly to realize this occurred" and notify the police, the shadow official explains, "leaving them a week late in the search to find him."
The shadow minister criticises Lammy's handling during recent PMQs and alleges him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing mistaken inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick underlines that "each accidental discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the former Conservative government, but says the figure "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he adds: "What the British people want to see now are proper safeguards put in place."
"This represents a specific administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice overseen by the minister," the opposition member concludes.
