The Reze Arc Movie Leads American Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Can Sony claim to have repeated their success? In the wake of the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100M mark worldwide, attaining a worldwide gross of over $108 million in its opening frame. This feature outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable U.S. and International Results

The work of director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M in the U.S. after a robust $5.2 million Saturday earnings and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film earned nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million through Sony distribution ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2 million domestic). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.

Parallels to Past Successful Anime Films

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, comparing the feature's anticipated earnings to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical eighteen million dollars in the U.S.. The new film's debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible the Reze Arc movie will achieve the earnings seen by mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the distributor.

Promotional Campaigns Fuel Success

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized fan engagement to propel their dominance at the animated movie market. This film's marketing campaign kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a notable appearance at New York Comic Con showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for general audiences and content creators as well after the final day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

2025 stands as a big year for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has an additional anime film debuting in the coming months in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
