The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Killer.
The pair of scholars who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the sole person of interest in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.
She served as second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
Nine more persons were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.
“We have a murderer out there,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our city”.
The gunman discharged a weapon inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the media outlet.
Officers that searched the inn found a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, as was reported.
The Wounded Victims
Regarding the nine injured, one student was released from the hospital, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Additional Memorials
Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at the university she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and peers and mourn the loss of his potential.”
