When Beachgoers Escaped Attack, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Location.
Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed cracking sounds reverberating across the neighbourhood.
“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her something was wrong.
While standing on the road, conversing with a pair who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved into something that surely every instinct would signal you to move in the reverse way.
“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle running.”
A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Tragedy
The image Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous those hurt.
Local Outpouring and Assistance
Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the attack becoming a temporary treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, for instance rushing into the ocean to rescue people who were struggling.
In the days after the attack, statements of gratitude flooded in. A social media message conveyed thanks for the lifeguards who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.
The squad of beach patrol later shared a communication, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.
“Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care shown towards our personnel,” the team commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”
Local Government Recognition
Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team acted heroically from the moment the incident commenced through to late that evening.
“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a local official.
“The team exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for the public, but what we observed on that evening should be celebrated.
“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the midst of such hatred.”
